About Us

Seattle Sikh Education Foundation was founded by Dr. Piyush Walia and Dr. Gurpinderjeet Kaur in April 2018. For the last few years, we had discussed the idea of starting a foundation to give back to the local community. Piyush and Gurpinder are both strong advocates for the importance of higher education for the youth. Our goal is to increase awareness about importance of education and increase parental involvement in child's learning. There is substantial evidence that one of the most effective ways to increase student achievement is for parents to be actively involved in the lives of their children.

Gurpinder grew up in Kent and graduated from the University of Washington in 2007. She later received her Doctor of Optometry degree from Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University in 2011. In 2012, Gurpinder then completed an ocular disease residency at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center and received her fellowship in ocular disease. She is currently practicing at Cascade Vision Center in Renton, WA.

Piyush obtained a bachelors in Mechanical Engineering in India and moved to the US to get his Masters degree in Biomedical Engineering. After working at the Cleveland Clinic, he discovered his passion for research and innovation and went on to get his doctorate degree in Applied Biomedical Engineering. Piyush also served as a part-time lecturer for graduate studies at the Cleveland State University. He is currently working for a medical imaging technology company managing their product research and development.

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.
